Melting into Ecstasy
“So what someone
does who seeks enlightenment, deeper, clarified awareness, a finer
way of perceiving life - what they’re seeking to do is melt
the self. This is not done in one fiery blast. It’s done very
gradually. A little at a time. And as we melt the self, we then,
after it melts a little bit, we allow it to solidify and it solidifies
in new patterns.
What we’re seeking to do is become transparent. Sort of a
transparent window on reality. But that takes time to do. We’re
starting with a very solid objectified view of ourselves and existence.
So to change that around, it’s necessary to gradually loosen
up the glue that binds the self together. I suppose you could say
you’ve become unglued, right?”
Tantric
Buddhism, Tape 1 - January, 1990
So, Dorothy, trying to snuff out the fire that is burning the Scarecrow,
throws water on her burning friend. As she pushes the bucket out towards
her friend, the water extinguishes not only the fire that is burning
the Scarecrow, but the wicked witch. The witch screeches, as she shrinks
away, “I’m melting, I’m melting!!”
This then, is your future. Only, you are throwing the bucket of water
on yourself, knowing that the consequences are your own death. This
sounds like an inadvisable practice, since you will finally disappear.
It is true! Your ego recognizes the plot, and fights you every step
of the way. You sense, as you get less and less solid, that your demise
is close. So, you watch a lot of TV, and run back into the world of
maya as fast as you can.
You try to get solid by eating a side of beef. You do this for a while,
and you gain weight, which of course, makes you feel solid.
But, my friend, you have only been tricking yourself. Your ego is fighting
the battle of its life. It may win, and you may become an overweight
couch potato who watches infomercials at 3:00 am., witching hour, when
you can’t sleep. Your ego knows that is the best time to meditate,
when the world is asleep.
However, if you have been practicing for a number of years, your ego
probably won’t win, though the battle will be splendid.
Just think back, if you can, to the number of times that you sat and
fried your solid state. You may have been in L.A., or San Francisco,
or New York. You may have been in the islands, or the desert. But if
you were sitting with Rama, you were fried. You melted, (I am not so
sure it was little by little. . . but maybe).
Each time you opened your awareness to a moment of satori, or an evening
of samadhi, your kundalini-generated heat melted you. And you became
more refined awareness, and your ego died another death. Each time you
sit in silence, anywhere, anytime, you melt. You become lighter, less
solid, more transparent.
A word of caution: The next time you are driving your car, and people
keep pulling in front of you, your transparency is showing---or would
that be not showing. In moments like that, you really have to pull some
solid lines in so that you can get through the drive.
So, if you are conscious that this practice will kill you, your ego,
why in the world do you continue to practice. Why do you do that? Your
ego really does resist, so you have to push against yourself!
You do it because you melt into enlightened awareness,
ecstasy, nirvana. That is why. And that is why your ego doesn’t
stand a snowball’s chance in hell!
So, if you find yourself singing this piece from the Chicago Musical,
you’ll know why.
“Cellophane, Mr. Cellophane, should have
been my name, cuz you can look right through me, walk right by me, and
never know I’m there!”
