The Absence Beckons

-- from Rama's tapes

Remember, the teacher is a doorway, the teacher is an absence, not a presence. Oh, you see a body, and you hear them talk, and you see a bit of a personality. But that's all a front. It's a prop. It gives you something to look at and focus on. The teacher is an absence, the teacher is a nothingness, a wonderful nothingness that you can walk through. And then there's nothing but light, there's no teacher, no you, just light.
-Rama

"An Absence, not a presence." If I think back on the moments that were over the top, I know this is true. Isn't that why we all went to sit with Rama?

I remember sitting in an auditorium in Los Angeles, with a large group of people, and I was gazing at my teacher. He was funny, he was poignant, he was able to give Dharma talks like nobody else. But I was always waiting for the moment when it all went away. All of the props. It was that space, that magical space, that brought me back again and again. Those precious moments of satori, those glimpses of enlightenment, that is why I sat with Rama.

I miss Rama. I miss sitting with him, listening to him, laughing with him, and slipping through the doorway to enlightenment.

But there is a secret. I get so caught up in the physical reality that I miss the most incredible secret. Those magical moments of absence, of silent light, are always waiting for me. The doorway, the absence is ever present. Somewhere in a dream. Somewhere on a walk, somewhere in meditation. Somewhere in silence.

I understand that the teacher is the doorway. Through the teacher is eternity. But I have to be really honest here. I am glad the teacher is Rama, beckoning me   Home.   Aum. Aaauuummmmmmm.
